The crockpot is a slow cooker method of preparing hot meals that has been around for ages. While many new cutting-edge kitchen appliances pop up on the market every day, the crockpot remains a favorite kitchen staple. Its versatility allows you to make a broad range of meals from breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack recipes. Whether you’re a hardcore vegan or on the ketogenic diet, the crockpot will provide you with delicious meals for years to come. Enjoy these keto crockpot recipes!
Keto Meal Prep Using the Crockpot
Meal prep helps our diets go smoothly and saves time in the long run. Many people choose to cook all their make-ahead keto meals on one day, but this can be very time consuming and take the entire day. By using a crockpot to prep keto meals, you can save a ton of time doing activities instead of staring at the stove. So next time you are getting ready to go grocery shopping, be sure to have these useful keto recipes on hand.
Keto Crockpot Tips & Tricks
Choose the Right Size
You will know you have the right size if your ingredients fill one-half to two-thirds of the pot. For large batch meal preps or families, opt for the 8-quart Crockpot. Only need to meal prep for one? Try out the 6-quart Crockpot instead.
Use ‘Cheap Cuts’ That’re High Fat
It’s the keto diet after all! Make sure you’re grabbing the high-fat meat options. They’re easier on your wallet and will help you hit your daily macro goals. Plus, we all know that fatty meats stay juicier and taste way better!
Add Dairy Towards the End
Adding dairy too early in the cooking process will cause that unsightly lumpy texture. Add your milk, cream, cheese, and other dairy products during the last 15 to 30 minutes of the cooking cycle. Cooking dairy last allows thorough cooking without compromising the mouthfeel of your food.
Set and Forget
While it’s tempting to check on your food to see how it’s coming along, this extends the cooking process. Each time you open the slow cooker, it takes approximately 20 minutes for it to return to the desired temperature. So next time you’re feeling curious, brush it off and enjoy some time for yourself.
Ease up on the Liquid
I’m pretty guilty of adding extra liquid to recipes to add moisture. As expected, this ends up diluting the flavor and altering the intended texture. Don’t worry; you can trust these recipes!
Properly Store Your Meal Prep
Ceramic slow cooker liners help food retain heat. To ensure your food cools quickly inside the refrigerator, use quality meal prep containers. These meal prep containers are freezer safe, microwave safe, BPA-free, and dishwasher safe. I find them very useful for portion control as well.
Quick Cleanup
Using non-stick spray before adding ingredients will save you later on when it’s time for clean up. Another option is to use slow cooker liners that you simply remove after use.
Fresh Herbs at the End
Add your fresh herb ingredients at the very end for bright flavor and a better color.
Hard Vegetables go in First
Root vegetables like potatoes and carrots should go at the bottom of the crockpot where they can retain moisture and cook efficiently.
