Wondering if there is a way to make an easy fish drawing? There is! Once you break everything down, learning how to draw fish is a breeze. If drawing a fish is why you are here, read on. 🙂
This step-by-step fish drawing tutorial will help you create a cute cartoon fish in no time. Whether you are an adult looking to learn some basic drawings or want to help your kid draw, this guide will help with exactly that. Each step is made as simple to follow as possible to make learning to draw fun.
Before we begin the fish drawing tutorial, you will want to check that you have the required materials. You will need drawing pencils, a sketching pad, and erasers. That’s it! There is no need to run to the store if you have all those things.
If you want to color in your fish, make sure you have some beautiful, quality colored pencils on hand. Here are some of my favorite coloring pencils.
How to Draw Fish
I personally adore fish! They are cute, come in so many colors, and are in the ocean (one of my favorite places). While I wish I could show you all the beautiful fish colors out there, we will use an orange fish for today’s drawing purposes.
To follow along with the drawing tutorial, please take note of the blue reference lines. These lines are there to let you know what you should be working on in the current step. For example, if you look below, you will see that there is a curved vertical blue line in the second step. That means you should be drawing that blue line at that time.

Easy Step-by-Step Fish Drawing Tutorial
Step 1: Draw the Fish Body
First, please draw the shape above to create the body of your fish. This will include the mouth of your fish and the base of its tail.
Step 2: Draw the Shape of Your Fish Face
This vertical line will be the separation between the head and body of your fish.
Step 3: Draw Fish Eyes
Now, we will add in the outline of the fish’s eye.
Step 4: Color/Shade in the Fish Eye
Shade in the color of your fish’s eye. You can use your desired color. If this is your first practice drawing, I recommend just shading the eyes in with your drawing pencil.
Step 5: Draw the Top Fin
Time to get a fin in! For step five, please draw the top fin of your fish.
Step 6: Draw the Bottom Fin
Now that we have the top fin, it is time to draw the bottom. Just like the top fin, the bottom fin will start out larger at the left and become smaller as you go right.
Step 7: Draw the Fish Tail
Now for that cute tail! It is time to add a tail to the back of your fish’s body.
Step 8: Draw the Side Fins
Here you will draw in the fin located on the side of your fish. In this case, it will be in the middle of the drawing.
Step 9: Draw Some Fin and Tail Details
We will add a little bit of interest to the drawing by putting some lines on the side fin and tail.
Step 10: Draw Some Scales
Fish have beautiful scales so let’s add them into our drawing. For this step, you can add little scale details, like the ones shown above.
Step 11: Color in Your Fish (Optional)
Want to give your fish the gift of color? Now that you have completed you fish drawing, you can color your fish any color you’d like. If you need some inspiration, you can use the drawing above for reference. 🙂
