While this word may sound unfamiliar, it is actually a dish from French cuisine. It can be translated to “freshwater crawfish.” Ecrevisse are boiled and served with butter sauce or shrimp sauce.
Edam is a type of soft cheese with origins in the Netherlands. It has been traditionally made from cow’s milk, but today it can be found in varieties such as goat and sheep’s milk. Edam gets its name from Ede which was an old town near Amsterdam where this variety of cheese originated.
The e-word edamame is actually a type of soybeans that are boiled in their pods. Edamames hail from Japan and can be eaten as they are or mixed with various seasonings like salt, sugar, chili pepper powder, garlic powder (or any other seasoning you might prefer). They make for an easy snack or appetizer.
Eel is a type of fish that you might find in France, Japan, or Spain. It has been eaten for centuries as well and it features prominently on many dishes all around the world.
Eggfruit is a hybrid of the eggplant and the grape. It has thin, brown skin that can be peeled off to reveal emerald-green flesh with small black seeds scattered throughout. The plant takes about 100 days to mature from planting to harvesting time which might make it hard for gardeners in colder climates but it’s worth the wait because it can produce up to 150 fruits per plant.
It is a good alternative for people with nut or egg allergies, as well as those who are vegan and vegetarian since they contain very little fat and no cholesterol at all. Plus the plants don’t require any pesticides which give them an edge over other commonly grown crops.
Egg noodles are a type of pasta made from eggs and flour. The egg acts as the binding agent to hold together what would otherwise be just plain old dough; when cooked, these noodles will have a slightly chewy texture that’s totally different than regular spaghetti or angel hair pasta. Some people find this characteristic pleasing (especially in soup) while others find the egg noodles to be too watery.
Egg salad is made with eggs, mayonnaise or yogurt, salt, and pepper. It originates from the United States in 1860s Philadelphia.
Since then it has become popular throughout North America and Europe among other regions around the world. The earliest mention of egg salad in print was 1869.
It is a popular dish at picnics and barbecues because it can be prepared ahead of time, travels well if made with mayonnaise or yogurt as the dressing rather than raw eggs, and doesn’t require refrigeration during transport.
Eggnog is a type of sweet, creamy dairy-based beverage that’s made with eggs and milk.
What are the benefits: The major benefit to eggnog is its high protein content and healthy fats from the yolks and cream used in it. It also has some calcium for bone health, vitamin A for eye health, and vitamin D for immune system health.
Eggnog was created by a physician in the late 1700s, who wanted to concoct a nutritious yet tasty drink for patients.
Eggnog is usually made with sugar and milk or cream. It can also include other ingredients like cinnamon, nutmeg, gingerbread spice mix, or vanilla extract. These spices give it its distinctive flavor and aroma.
A member of the nightshade family, eggplant is an edible fruit that can be cooked in many different ways. It has purple skin and white flesh with seeds inside that are used for cooking purposes. Eggplants are typically boiled whole or baked.
They have many nutritional benefits, such as being a good source of fiber and potassium.
Eggplant is often used in dishes, but it can also be eaten on its own or turned into pickles. It’s typically sliced thinly to preserve the shape before cooking so that it doesn’t curl up too much during boiling or baking.
Eggrolls are a Chinese-American food that is generally made from some type of pork or chicken, soaked in a soy sauce mixture and minced cabbage. They can be fried until crispy or deep-fried to produce the more common gelatinous texture. Egg rolls were invented by Shiu Jai Huang who immigrated to New York City from Shanghai in 1962.
Egg tarts are a pastry dish of gently baked shortcrust pastry cases with egg custard filling.
Both the name and the distinctive shape come from their resemblance to pasties, small pies filled with meat or fruit that were popular in Britain during medieval times.
Egg tarts are often served as a dessert accompanied by tea.

It’s also often used in casseroles such as lasagna to add firmness and texture while preventing overcooking.
Elderberries are berries that grow on elder bushes. They have many health benefits, including helping to fight the common cold and flu virus.
They also contain vitamin C, which is known for boosting your immune system and preventing illnesses like diarrhea or pneumonia. Elderberry syrup can be made at home with just a few ingredients: water, sugar, lemon juice, and elderberries. It’s yummy served chilled with ice!
Elderberry branches are also often used to make wreaths or garlands that can be hung in a room during the winter season as decoration for holidays like Christmas or Hanukkah.
Eggo waffles were invented by a Minneapolis company, the Eggo Frozen Waffle Company. They introduced their first frozen egg waffle in 1953 and since then they have expanded to include many different flavors of eggs, including chocolate chip, whole wheat, and blueberry.
The African fruit called enset is used by people in Ethiopia to make a type of bread. Enset has been shown to have more iron than red meat, making it an important food for low-income mothers and their children. Studies also show that the fiber content in enset can help lower cholesterol levels, which makes this a healthy ingredient.
Empanadas are a type of stuffed pastry with a savory filling. They come in many varieties, but most have meat and vegetables inside them, like chicken or beef stewed with tomatoes for example. Empanadas can be deep-fried before they’re cooked on the stovetop to create crunchy crusts around their soft interiors, but they can also be baked. It’s a dish that comes from many Latin American countries and is often served as an appetizer or a side to the main entree like chicken for example.

Enchiladas are a type of rolled tortilla that is filled with some kind of meat or vegetable, covered in chili pepper sauce and baked.
Mexican enchiladas are typically made with corn tortillas wrapped around chicken, cheese, onion or other fillings then smothered in red salsa
Endives are a type of lettuce that is typically eaten raw. It has a mild flavor and can be used in salads or as an appetizer on top of toast points. They grow by seed, but because they do not tolerate being grown from cuttings, endive cannot be propagated this way. Instead, the only way to harvest endives is by cutting the whole plant off at ground level and then replanting it.
English muffins are a type of baked good that was first made in America, and then later exported to England. English Muffins were brought to the US by Samuel Bath Thomas who worked for an American bakery company called The Cook Company in 1872.
The original recipe had no sugar or salt added, which is why these ingredients are often added.
The word “English” in this context does not refer to the country England, it is just an adjective describing a muffin style that was popular in America at the time from English immigrants who had come over before 1872.
The European and American flatfishes are both called soles, but their names have nothing to do with where they live. The name “soles” actually comes from a Latin word meaning “sole of foot.” Both types of flatfish look like soles indeed!
The English walnut is a tasty high protein snack with plenty of fiber. It’s great for digestion!
Ensaimadas are a type of pastry found in most Latin American countries that are filled with sweet or savory fillings. The word “ensaimada” comes from the Arabic word sammāya, which means “to twist” and refers to the twisting motion used when baking these pastries.
Ensaimadas are traditionally shaped like a figure ‘S’ and use lard as the primary ingredient in their dough, giving it its signature taste of fried pastry combined with a sweet or savory filling. The dough is left to proof overnight before being rolled out into long rectangular shapes that resemble crepes but are much thicker.
The filling is typically a pastry cream but can be anything from cheese to the classic ensaimada de chocolate y queso (chocolate and cheese). The dough is then pleated like an accordion at regular intervals of about one inch before being braided into a knot shape. This process creates layers of pastry and crepelike texture, which serves to hold in the filling.
“Escargot,” in French cooking, is snail meat that has been cooked and served as a dish or an appetizer.
Escarole is a leafy vegetable in the chicory family that is related to endive.
Escarole has a tough, white stem and long green leaves with a mild flavor similar to lettuce or cabbage.
This vegetable can be eaten raw in salads, cooked as an ingredient for soups or casseroles, boiled with pasta, or braised alone as a side dish.
Espresso is a delicious coffee drink that is roasted and ground more finely than drip coffee.
Espresso has about one-third the amount of caffeine as a cup of brewed java. The short shots are made by forcing hot water at pressure (about nine bars) through finely ground dark, oily beans—typically Arabica beans from South America or Africa. Espresso drinks are popular in Italy and the United States.
Espresso shots are often mixed with steamed milk, hot or cold frothed milk, or water just before consumption to produce a variety of espresso-based beverages such as cappuccino, latte macchiato (coffee “marked” with a dot of foamed milk), café Americano (e.g., with hot water), or café au lait (coffee “marked” with a dash of milk).
Espresso is served black, often sweetened with sugar, and topped off with steamed milk foam called latte art such as heart shapes.
Evaporated milk is often used in desserts like pies or custards.
It is made by heating whole milk to near boiling temperature and then removing the water, which condenses into a syrup that can be added back in when using it as an ingredient in recipes.
The flavor of evaporated milk is rich but more subtle than regular condensed dairy products since its sugar content has been reduced.
The color is usually a light tan or ivory with an almost translucent appearance.
Evaporated milk can be found in most grocery stores and some convenience stores, but it will need to be purchased at the meat counter in order for it not to contain any gelatin or animal products which would make it unsuitable for vegan recipes.
