Fry Time: 10 minutes

Chill Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup apple cider/juice
  • 3 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
  • 6 teaspoons melted butter
  • ¼ cup applesauce
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 1 egg

Apple Pie Filling

  • 20 ounce can apple pie filling, rinsed and diced
  • 1 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Topping

  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, dark brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the melted butter, applesauce, sour cream, and egg until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the apple cider/juice to the wet ingredients and stir to combine.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Do not overmix.
  5. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes.
  6. While the dough chills, prepare the apple pie filling: In a bowl, combine the apple pie filling with cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, water, and lemon juice, cooking over medium low heat until everything thickens together. Set aside.
  7. Once the dough has chilled, roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about ½-inch thickness.
  8. Use a round cutter to cut out doughnut shapes, making sure to cut two circles for each doughnut.
  9. Place half of the cut-out doughnuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  10. Spoon a small amount of the apple pie filling onto the center of each dough circle on the baking sheet.
  11. Top each filled dough circle with another cut-out dough circle, pressing the edges to seal. (Easiest done by using the cutter again to seal the two dough pieces.
  12. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat for frying.
  13. Carefully place the filled doughnuts into the hot oil, frying a few at a time, until golden brown on both sides (about 3-5 minutes per side).
  14. Once cooked, remove the doughnuts and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  15. In a shallow bowl, mix the white granulated sugar and cinnamon for the topping.
  16. While the doughnuts are still warm, coat them in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  17. Allow the doughnuts to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your delicious apple pie doughnuts!
