11 Fun DIY Doormats That’re Beyond Easy to Make (With Stencils!)

11 Unique DIY Door mats With Stencils

-Guest Post From Simply Self Storage

DIY Doormats are the perfect way to show a bit of your personality first thing when a guest comes over to your house. However, most people don’t take advantage of that opportunity! The market is loaded with generic, boring doormats and people seem to buy them.

Did you know that you can make your own doormat?! They turn out quite professional looking too (if you follow directions). All you need are a few items that you can get at the craft store (or online) to get started.

While you can make your own design and print your own stencils, I really like the ones that Simply Self Storage have made. There are 11 printable doormat stencils to choose from, all ranging from zany to more traditional.

One of my personal favorites is the Cute Shoes design, but they are honestly all really cute. On that note, these make GREAT housewarming gifts. It’s less expensive if you make several at one time, so whip up one for you and a few to use as gifts for later!

Follow the instructions below to get started, and have fun!

Materials:

Material for Making DIY Doormat

Most of these materials you can get at your local art supply store,  although you may have to order the blank, coir mats online. The stencils work best on standard 18×30 inch doormats.

  1. Print Your Stencil

Print your chosen stencil on printer-safe cardstock. It comes out piece by piece so you will need to cut most of them to fit properly on the mats.

  1. Tape Your Mat

Apply slightly-overlapping tape to the doormat so that it covers the entire surface. You will want to make sure it’s stuck really securely before starting.

  1. Arrange the Design

Layer the stencils exactly how you want them to appear on you doormat. Once you have it perfectly aligned, pin them down.

  1. Cut Out Your Design—Carefully!

This is the trickiest part of the process, cut out your design with an exacto knife. You will be cutting it through the cardstock and down into the tape. Be careful around corners, and realize that many designs will have “floating” pieces. Just make sure these are pinned down.

  1. Paint Your Mat (Several Coats)

Paint several coats with your sponge applicator, finding a happy medium between pushing hard and not too hard. If you push too hard it could bleed, but if you don’t push hard enough it will take a million coats.

  1. Let It Dry and Peel Back the Tape

Now you wait. Once it’s dry you can peel back the tape and paper to reveal your mat!

  1. Enjoy Your Doormat!

Now all that’s left to do is to place it outside and enjoy it!
